Board President

Sherri has been on the Protectors Board since 2012 and was elected as Board President in 2023. Sherri has applied for and won many grants for the Protectors, including raising six-figure funds to construct our Monumental Mammoth, an incredible art installation that toured Burning Man and Life is Beautiful before its permanent display at Ice Age Fossils State Park!

Vice President and On-Site Activities Chair

A Protectors’ founding member, Sandy is a retired real estate agent who now dedicates her days in extensive service to the public lands that the Protectors support. She leads On-Site activities, the I’m a Protector Program, the B.A.R.K. Rangers and many informative hikes each year. She has written five hike guidebooks and is now writing a guidebook about the plants that can be found in this area.

Amanda Simmons

Secretary

A United States Air Force Veteran and current federal employee, Amanda serves as our Board Secretary. She and her family have been exploring what is now Tule Springs National Monument since moving here in 2009.  They are proud to have helped build one of the first trails at Ice Age Fossils State Park 2019.

 

Dev Basudev
Dev Basudev

Director

A United States Air Force Veteran with a wealth of knowledge and experience, Dev leads many on-site activities, such as hikes, fence repair, clean-ups and the Perimeter Patrol Program. He also assists National Park Service staff with maintenance and upkeep efforts and can be found on the Monument almost every day of the week. Since helping to construct our Monumental Mammoth, Dev is now pursuing another college degree in welding so he can be of even further assistance to our public lands! 

Kathryn Brandel

Director

Another of the founding members, Kathryn is retired from a career in social work and higher education administration. She served as the Board Secretary for many years, since Protectors was first established as a 501 C (3) organization through 2023, and is a passionate promoter of the Protectors’ activities in Sun City Aliante and beyond. 

Jill DeStefano
Jill DeStefano

Director

Jill is one of the five founders of Protectors of Tule Springs. In 2006, she organized a group of citizens who worked for eight years to raise awareness about the importance of protecting this land. Through those efforts, Tule Springs Fossil Beds National Monument was designated as the 405th unit of the National Park Service in 2014. Jill retired from teaching in 2021 and was the recipient of the Heart of Education Award in 2019.

Director

Kori is Public Relations Manager for the City of Henderson and was formerly with the Clark County School District. Kori joined the Board in 2016 and manages communications for the Protectors, such as our web site, newsletters, media relations and more.

Dr. Steve Rowland
Dr. Steve Rowland

Director

Dr. Rowland is a professor emeritus at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas specializing in paleontology, geology of southern Nevada and the history of geology. He’s led excavations and even made fossil discoveries and his scientific knowledge and expertise are an invaluable resource for our work.

Desiré Schultz
Desiré Schultz

Director

Desire is a School Counselor in the Clark County School District. Originally the Member Representative, she officially joined the Board in 2022. As a horse owner, she leads efforts for the Mounted Horse Patrol which supports National Park Service with monitoring the Monument lands and the H.O.O.F. Rangers who pledge and promote proper horsemanship on public lands. Desire is also involved in our educational outreach activities.

Will Shimono
Will Shimono

Director

Will is an avid trail runner and enjoys running on the Monument. We finally caught up with him one day and convinced him to join us in helping others to enjoy the beautiful public lands that we help to protect. Will works tirelessly behind the scenes and is a friendly face at most of our community outreach events.
